Banyoles is a municipality and capital of the Pla de l\'Estany region. It is located halfway between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees.



The main attraction of the city of Banyoles is the lake, the l\'estany de Banyoles, one of the largest in Catalonia. And it is probable that the origin of its name \"balneum\", bathroom, comes from this space.



Its origins are remote, since there are data from ancient times. An example is the prehistoric mandible that was found, or some of the Roman terracotta remains.



Even so, it is not until the 9th century that the current city begins to form. This is born around the Benedictine monastery of Sant Esteve, probably built on an old Roman temple. The city continues to be built around it and expands to the church of Santa Maria de los Turers. Thus, the town was marked by the presence of the monks until their expulsion in the 19th century.



In addition, in the 12th century Banyoles was already an important cloth center that reached its maximum splendor during the 13th and 14th centuries. Banyoles had the cloths of the Mayor channel, the tanning mills, the dye and the flour mills. At the end of the 15th century, the construction of the wall had already been completed, which for some time had been in charge of protecting the population that had been installed inside it.



Starting in the 14th century, Banyoles suffered a serious decline that lasted until the 18th century, when it became one of the main producers of hemp fabrics. Even so, the crisis was not long in coming and, in the 19th century, agriculture and livestock became important.



Nowadays, Banyoles is a city that enjoys its natural assets to offer everything that is asked of it. It has obtained the distinction of Sports Tourism Destination (DTE) for the specialties of rowing and canoeing.
